Celebrated singer and trombonist Ray Greene presents his upcoming album, Stay, on April 22 at De Duif in Amsterdam. Greene, best known for his work with Tower of Power and as lead vocalist for Santana, brings a soulful sound reminiscent of Otis Redding and Sam Cooke.
In Amsterdam, Greene brings a band full of European talent such as drummer Alex Bernath and guitarist Jonas Vogelsang, who met working with Jamal Thomas, as well as renowned bassist Reggie Washington. On record, Greene is in equally good company, with Santana-guitarist and vocalist Tommy Anthony, Tower of Power-guitarist Jerry Cortez, and Sheila E.-bassist Ray McKinley backing up his musical storytelling.
On his new album set for release on Ubuntu Records on 14 April and titled “Stay” poses, then answers that question, “What would Bobby Womack listen to, had he still been alive?”. Greene does not shy away from any topic on his new album, focusing on relationships that shaped him throughout his life and career. From tight friendships to stormy romantic relationships, Greene takes his audience on a journey past complex personal stories through his signature blend of soul, jazz improvisation, blues, gospel, pop, and even reggae.
Greene was born in the Southern state of Georgia, in the United States, in the heart of the Gospel tradition. He developed into a unique singer and performer, while also absorbing elements of soul and R&B. The charismatic singer’s CV includes Tower of Power and Santana, but also greats such as Aretha Franklin, The Isley Brothers, and Natalie Cole. Carlos Santana stated “Having brother Ray Greene in the band brings us all to the spirit of church and the streets, ever so soulful and heartfelt. We love and cherish him”.
