Released on September 15, “Ode to Joe” is the fourth album as a leader by Southern California based drummer and percussionist David Whitman. The album pays homage to the golden era of legendary labels like Blue Note, Riverside, and Verve. These were the times when the studio was a realm of spontaneity, passion, and sheer magic, and Whitman brings that spirit alive in this fantastic fourth release.
“Ode to Joe” was born over two intense recording days at the prestigious Capitol Studios in Los Angeles. Working alongside arranger Andrew Neesley, Whitman orchestrated a hard-swinging session featuring a stellar septet. This ensemble boasts top-tier artists, including saxophonist Bob Sheppard, guitarist Bruce Forman, and Grammy Award-winning pianist Geoffrey Keezer, each leaving their indelible mark on the album.
This album is a dedication to Whitman’s former mentor, the legendary drummer Joe Morello from the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Whitman, drawing upon Morello’s teachings that emphasized technical nuances of touch and sound, infuses the album with a masterful drumming approach.
The opening track, “Time Out,” sets the pace with tight horn arrangements giving way to energetic solos from Forman, Sheppard, and Keezer, showcasing Whitman’s drumming prowess and revealing the influence of his mentor, drummer Dave King. “Bop This” is a playground for both Keezer and Forman, where they let loose on this track based on rhythm changes, followed by a commanding drum solo by Whitman.
“Home” introduces a soulful New Orleans feel, infusing the track with a second-line groove, enriched by dynamic interplay between Dragon and Whitman. Neesley’s trumpet then graces the track with another standout solo by Keezer, completing this musical journey.
The eponymous track, “Ode to Joe,” is a nod to the great saxophonist Joe Henderson, demonstrating Sheppard’s exceptional control and finesse. “Nees Plees” pays homage to Benny Golson, adding surprising twists and turns to keep the listener engaged. The exceptional chemistry between Dragon, Keezer, and Whitman is palpable.
“With Love,” penned by Whitman, stands as a unique instance of brushes on the recording. It features Bob Sheppard and Geoffrey Keezer, along with co-producer Chris Montgomery on guitar, delivering a heartfelt performance.
Released on September 15, 2023, “Ode to Joe” is an exposition of musical collaboration and creativity. The album showcases outstanding interplay between Keezer and Whitman, sophisticated arrangements, and the distinctive and mature styles of each ensemble member. These jazz maestros, who have collectively shaped a generation of musicians, would undoubtedly bring a smile to both Morello and Henderson. Whitman’s “Ode to Joe” is a strong release, rooted in tradition and shouls appeal to aficionados and beyond. Highly recomended.
