Featured Gig | Artvark Saxophone Quartet, Bimhuis Amsterdam

Written by | Concerts, Featured Concerts, Featured Gigs, News

Artvark is not just another saxophone quartet. Discarding the chairs and the music stands, Artvark moves, whizzes and growls. Artvark dances through musical traditions following and improvised choreography. Artvark represents innovative original compositions, singular soloists and the adventurous grooves of four saxophones. Artvark connects different worlds and shifts boundaries, within the group and in music as well.

During the concert in the Bimhuis this coming Saturday the Quartet will present their new CD “Trance”. Following a variety of collaborations, the quartet recently released an album purely as a quartet. This album is different than the eclectic productions that Artvark has become known for. This group describes Trance as a single story in a single breath. Out of one tone the listener is transported slowly through a pulsating rhythm towards caleidoscopic textures of criss-crossing melodies and colorful harmonies.

Artvark has performed at major international festivals such as The North Sea Jazz Festival, The Cairo Jazz Festival, The Bohemia Jazz Festival in Prague, Jazz Bruges and toured in Ireland, Turkey and South Africa. The saxophone quartet has engaged in special and remarkable collaborations, such as with jazz legend Peter Erskine, Senegalese master drummer Doudou N’Diaye Rose and the Danish band Efterklang. With the classical soprano Claron McFadden they recorded the ‘Sly Meets Callas’ record and played at numerous prestigious festivals, including the ‘Grachtenfestival Amsterdam’ and ‘Rotterdamse Opera Dagen’ and toured the theaters extensively.

The Artvark Quartet includes Rolf Delfos – alto sax, Bart Wirtz – alto sax, Mete Erker – tenor sax and Peter Broekhuizen on baritone sax. Concert details below.
