CD Review: The Easy Rollers, And Another Thing – Jazz in Europe

CD Review: The Easy Rollers, And Another Thing

The Easy Rollers’ latest release, “…And Another Thing,” is a deeply informed dive into the world of 1930s swing and early jazz, crafted for those who savour historical accuracy and ensemble chemistry over willful innovation. The band’s commitment to the Jazz Age sound is clear from the opening notes, and while the album doesn’t chase novelty, it excels in creating an authentic listening experience—a priority that many style-savvy fans will appreciate.

One of the album’s unquestionable strengths lies in its sonic presentation. The natural timbres of horns, rhythm section, and vocals are captured with striking clarity, lending the record an immediacy that feels both inviting and unforced. The engineering choices respect the music’s roots, allowing subtle instrumental details and dynamic interplay to register without being clouded by studio sheen.

Musically, the execution is confident throughout. The rhythm section is locked into the style’s characteristic swing, supporting the frontline with authority and subtlety. Trumpeter Tom Sharp and saxophonist Jamie Stockbridge bring considered, idiomatic solos that stop short of pastiche, reflecting both technical discipline and a genuine affection for the idiom.

Vocalist Dani Sicari stands at the center of the project, her performances providing narrative continuity—never overstated, always engaged. Her command of early jazz stylings recalls period icons, but she avoids caricature, ensuring each track retains its own character.

New Orleans influences shine on tracks like “The Ballad of Billy, A Kid” and album closer “Jus’ One O’ Those Days,” where second-line grooves and blues-based forms are handled with care rather than flash. The latter, Stockbridge’s own composition, brings the set to a satisfying, festive close.

Among the standouts, “Maybe Tell Me” stands as an original ballad that channels the wistfulness of Billie Holiday’s early work without losing sight of the group’s own voice. “Ten Cents A Dance” is another highlight—the waltz structure is enriched by accordionist Andrzej Baranek, nodding to French chanson and weaving European influence seamlessly into the swing context.

For listeners specifically seeking groundbreaking jazz, this collection may feel anchored in tradition rather than propulsion; the intent here is tribute, not reinvention. Yet, as a document of 1930s swing interpreted by contemporary musicians with palpable respect for their source material, “…And Another Thing” succeeds on its own terms.

This is not an album that clamors for attention through novelty, but rather one that earns repeated listens through craft, strong ensemble work, and a clear passion for its chosen repertoire. Those drawn to authentic swing-era sounds will find plenty to enjoy, from the arresting vocals to the thoughtful arrangements and vividly recorded instrumental textures.
