In a significant archival release, the jazz community is poised to witness Alice Coltrane’s 1971 performance at Carnegie Hall, a landmark event that has been shrouded in partial recordings and tantalizing fragments yet never fully heard in context as a whole. The forthcoming album, Alice Coltrane – The Carnegie Hall Concert (Impulse!), scheduled for release on March 22, 2024, promises to deliver the complete recording of this iconic moment in jazz history.

Alice Coltrane’s performance at Carnegie Hall was part of a special gala benefiting the Integral Yoga Institute. Backed by a stellar ensemble of musicians, she took center stage in what is now regarded as a pivotal moment in her career. Recorded by Impulse! for a future release, the concert stands as Alice’s inaugural performance as a leader at the illustrious Carnegie Hall.

The setlist for the evening included two transcendental compositions from her recently released fourth solo album, Journey in Satchidananda, setting the tone for an extraordinary night. Adding to the unique flavor, Alice incorporated two compositions by her late husband, John Coltrane, marking a poignant tribute to the legendary saxophonist.

The ensemble featured a mix of jazz virtuosos, with saxophonists Pharoah Sanders and Archie Shepp, bassists Jimmy Garrison and Cecil McBee, and drummers Ed Blackwell and Clifford Jarvis. Additionally, two members of Satchidananda’s inner circle, Kumar Kramer and Tulsi Reynolds, contributed harmonium and tamboura, respectively, enriching the sonic landscape of the performance.

This album release comes at a significant juncture, as Impulse! and Verve Label Group collaborate with The John & Alice Coltrane Home to launch the “Year of Alice.” This year-long celebration is dedicated to honoring Alice Coltrane’s groundbreaking recordings for Impulse!, showcasing her enduring influence on jazz.

To inaugurate the “Year of Alice,” a special night of performances and speakers is scheduled at Birdland on February 22. The lineup includes luminaries such as Ravi Coltrane, Michelle Coltrane, Brandee Younger, and more, offering an immersive experience for jazz enthusiasts.

For those eager to explore the sonic depths of Alice Coltrane’s Carnegie Hall Concert, the first track, “Shiva-Loka,” is already available, accompanied by a visually engaging new visualizer shown above.

With the full release scheduled on March 22, 2024, this archival gem promises to provide a comprehensive view of a transformative moment in Alice Coltrane’s musical and spiritual journey. For more information and updates, visit ververecords.com.
