Album Preview: Bliss Quintet, Glasshouse

Written by | New Releases, News

The Bliss Quintet, a young and vibrant Norwegian jazz ensemble, will set the jazz world abuzz with the release of their highly anticipated second album, “Glasshouse,” on September 29, 2023, via Jazzland Records. Building on the success of their debut album, “Dramaqueen,” the quintet has solidified their position at the vanguard of the new generation and a pioneering force in the Scandinavian contemporary jazz scene.

Having garnered critical acclaim and a devoted fan base with their first album, “Dramaqueen” in 2022, Bliss Quintet has been captivating audiences across Europe and Scandinavia with their unique blend of sharp swing, contemporary jazz, Nordic lyricism, and raw, uncompromising energy. The band’s relentless dedication to their craft and democratic band-mentality shines through in their sophomore release, “Glasshouse.”

Comprising eight original tracks, “Glasshouse” is a musical exploration featuring contributions from all band members. The album is a testament to the band’s remarkable ensemble sound, where dramatic and sentimental ballads seamlessly coalesce with catchy, propelling horn riffs and intricate grooves, all set against open harmonic landscapes.

Bliss Quintet stays true to their roots, infusing playful interaction and wild, energetic presence into their music, reminiscent of renowned Nordic bands like Atomic and Masqualero. The album showcases the dynamic duo-sound of Oscar Andreas Haug’s quarter-toned trumpet and Zakarias Meyer Øverli’s majestic tenor-tone, forming the defining frontline of the record. Accompanied by the lyrical and classical-inspired piano playing of Benjamín Gísli Einarsson, the intense and propelling drumming of Rino Sivathas, and the rare acoustic bass guitar sound of Gard Kronborg, “Glasshouse” is a sonic journey that leaves an indelible mark.

In the words of journalist Selwyn Harris, Bliss Quintet is hailed as “…yet another impressive-sounding young Norwegian band for the future,” solidifying their position as a rising star in the jazz realm.

“Glasshouse” is available on CD, vinyl, and major streaming platforms, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in the evocative sounds of modern Nordic jazz. To celebrate the release, Bliss Quintet is embarking on a European and Scandinavian tour, promising fans an unforgettable live experience. Stay tuned for additional tour dates.
