Swiss guitarist Roberto Pianca’s group Sub Rosa gathers together some of the finest young jazz musicians on the swiss and international scene. The music is contemporary Jazz, reflecting many influences from modern music. Dealing with complexity in terms of composition as well as freedom within improvisation, the music will have a strong impact on an audience that loves listening to a contrast created between virtuosistic rhythmical patterns and aerial atmospheres, as well as a consistent musicality and interaction coming individually from all five members of the band.

The musicians appearing on this album have known each other for many years and have worked together in various combinations, yet all have a constant need of searching adventurous paths and unknown landscapes in the music, secret places for the music to happen. In fact, not for nothing, the Latin phrase “sub rosa” was chosen for the title of the band and their first album, it actually means “under the rose”, and is used in English to denote secrecy or confidentiality.

“Mono no aware”, literally “the pathos of things” is the bands second album and was released on 5 February 2021 on the Italian independent label Honolulu Records. The title can also be translated as “an empathy toward things”, or “a sensitivity to ephemera”, “Mono no aware” is a Japanese term for the transience of things, a bittersweet feeling of having been a witness to something that is going to finish or change, as in music, this is the essence of improvisation.
