Italian composer and guitarist Sabino de Bari released his latest album Ashanti in October to significant critical acclaim. This thrilling album features a brilliant quartet with Andrea Colella (double bass) Francesco De Rubeis (drums/percussion) Luciano Orologi (bass clarinettist) and of course acoustic guitar from Sabino himself.
Dedicated ‘to those who are forced from their homeland’ the album explores the story of a child called Ashanti searching for a place of peace, where there are no wars or hunger. We are all on that journey. Ashanti’s journey is compelling and intoxicating with Mediterranean folk, jazz and classical influences beautifully felt through every step in Ashanti’s peregrination.
This blending of styles reminds us of the power of working together and how seamlessly we are connected and signifies the importance of connectivity. The exquisite beauty of Sabino’s compositions must not be underestimated and his ability to skilfully communicate powerful emotions is significant. Having released several albums in a variety of formats, from solo guitar to chamber ensemble, and recently the stunning duo album It’s All We Have with Diana Torti, it is no wonder his award winning compositions are played all over the world.
The album features 12 tracks, all composed by Sabino, and he uses his striking Mediterranean sonic palette to beautiful effect, enabling the narration of Ashanti’s journey to be shared and felt. The instrumentation brings a rich and emotive texture that draws us in and allows us to travel on this mutual journey for peace and harmony. The depth of the bass clarinet adds a truthful rawness while also displaying surprising delicacy with some beautifully soaring and captivating lines. The musicians on this album are exceptional and are all given space to rise, to excite and reflect, while always being deeply connected to the whole and it is the strength of Sabino’s sensitivity and storytelling skills as a composer that must be credited here.
Ashanti is a stunning album. Sabino De Bari has demonstrated the power of the unexpected. The power of the correlation of cultures, emotional commonality and the sadness and joy felt while simply seeking something beautiful – peace.
