Sultan Stevenson to release new album “El Roi,”

Written by | New Releases, News

Last summer Edition Records announced the signing of pianist and composer Sultan Stevenson for his upcoming album “El Roi,” scheduled for release next month. This signing marks a significant step in Stevenson’s career, following the notoriety he received after the release of his debut album “Faithful One” two years earlier on Whirlwind Recordings.

Stevenson, a recent graduate of the Guildhall School of Music, has quickly established himself as a notable figure in the jazz world. His achievements include winning the ‘Newcomer of the Year’ Parliamentary Jazz Award in 2023. Stevenson’s musical education includes studying with renowned tutors such as Simon Purcell and Robert Mitchell, and he is an alumnus of both the Julian Joseph Jazz Academy and Tomorrow’s Warriors.

The pianist’s unique style blends traditional jazz elements with contemporary influences. His music has drawn comparisons to jazz legends like McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, and Kenny Kirkland. Stevenson’s approach to composition and performance is characterized by a focus on storytelling and accessibility, which has garnered attention from both jazz enthusiasts and new listeners.

Dave Stapleton, founder of Edition Records, commented on the signing, highlighting Stevenson’s abilities as a communicator and storyteller through his music. Stapleton noted the captivating and thought-provoking nature of Stevenson’s work as key factors in the label’s decision to sign him.

Stevenson expressed his enthusiasm about joining Edition Records, acknowledging the label’s contributions to the jazz scene in London and beyond. He emphasized the alignment between his artistic vision for “El Roi” and Edition Records’ understanding of his themes and approach.

“El Roi,” which translates to “God of Sight” in Hebrew, is set to explore themes of faith and identity. Stevenson explained that the album title encapsulates these concepts, with “God” referencing faith and “sight” alluding to perception – both how one is seen by others and how one perceives the world.

Beyond his musical endeavors, Stevenson has demonstrated a diverse range of interests and skills. During the COVID-19 lockdown, he developed a passion for creating bucket hats, learning to use a sewing machine and launching his own line. These hats, often featuring West African patterns and vibrant colors, serve as physical representations of Stevenson’s musical influences, with each design inspired by different jazz artists.

Stevenson’s background in jazz is deeply rooted in his upbringing. His father, John Stevenson, ran a jazz radio station in Barbados and worked as a journalist writing liner notes for albums. This early exposure to jazz legends significantly influenced Stevenson’s musical path.

As preparations for “El Roi” begin, the jazz community anticipates how Stevenson’s unique perspective and musical style will manifest in this new project under Edition Records. The album’s release in March 2025 is expected to be a significant event in the contemporary jazz landscape.
