Mauro Sigura Embarks on European Tour – Jazz in Europe

Mauro Sigura Embarks on European Tour

Written by | News, Tours

Italian multi-instrumentalist Mauro Sigura is set to embark on a European tour, showcasing his latest project DUNIA alongside collaborative performances with Migrantes and the Tular Trio. The tour, spanning from February to April 2025, will feature concerts in the UK, Italy, Croatia, and Germany, offering audiences a diverse range of musical experiences.

DUNIA, Sigura’s most recent musical endeavor, represents a bold step into the realm of electric jazz fusion. Formed in 2023, the Mauro Sigura Electric Quartet features Sigura on oud and bouzouki, Marcello Peghin on electric guitar, Pierpaolo Ranieri on electric bass, and Evita Polidoro on drums.

The project’s name, DUNIA, carries significant meaning, translating to “Woman” or “Mother” in some cultures and referencing Mother Earth in certain sub-Saharan traditions. This concept of universality is reflected in the music, which bridges ancient traditions with modern sounds, creating a unique fusion of jazz, world music, and Mediterranean influences.

DUNIA’s debut album, released under the S’ardmusic – Egea label, premiered at the European Jazz Festival 2023 in Cagliari, Italy. The album has been noted for its innovative approach, blending incisive melodies with layered textures and incorporating elements of jazz, fusion, Middle Eastern music, rock, and psychedelia.

The tour kicks off on February 25, 2025, with DUNIA performing at the Watermill Jazz Club in Dorking, UK. This marks a significant milestone for Sigura, as it will be his first performance in the United Kingdom.

Following the UK debut, Sigura will join forces with pianist Andrea Manzoni for two Migrantes performances in Italy. The first takes place on February 28 at the Jazz Club Lennie Tristano in Aversa, followed by a March 1 concert at the Teatro Massimo in Cagliari as part of the Festival del cinema Palestinese.

On March 14, Sigura will showcase another facet of his musical repertoire with the Tular Trio, featuring Natalino Marchetti and Francesco Savoretti, at the Ente Concerti in Zadar, Croatia.

The tour concludes with Sigura and Manzoni’s Migrantes project performing at Jazzahead! in Bremen, Germany, on April 25, 2025.

Born in Turin and now based in Sardinia, Mauro Sigura has established himself as a versatile musician known for his mastery of the oud and bouzouki. His musical journey began with rock and blues before expanding into jazz, folk, and world music, with a particular focus on Arab-Ottoman traditions.

Sigura’s career has been marked by numerous achievements and collaborations. He has performed at prestigious festivals worldwide, including DIM in Osaka and Tokyo, Sibiu Jazz Festival, and the Amman Jazz Festival. In 2012, he joined the renowned Italian world-music band Agricantus for their 2012-2013 tour. His accolades include winning the Mario Cervo Award twice (in 2016 and 2020) for Best Album Made in Sardinia, highlighting his significant contribution to the region’s music scene[.

Sigura’s music is characterized by its ability to blend diverse musical traditions with contemporary sounds. His background in philosophy, combined with his musical expertise, brings a unique depth to his compositions. The DUNIA project, in particular, showcases Sigura’s innovative approach. By adapting the oud to an electric context, he creates a soundscape that is both familiar and groundbreaking. The music seeks to bridge the gap between the particular and the universal, offering clear melodies set against complex, layered backgrounds.

As Sigura prepares to bring his music to new audiences across Europe, the tour promises to be a showcase of his evolving artistry and his ability to push the boundaries of contemporary world jazz fusion.

We will be publishing a full interview with Mauro Sigura in the coming weeks, providing further insight into his musical philosophy and the inspiration behind DUNIA and his other projects.
