Joe Dyson, Look Within.

Written by | New Releases Page

New Orleans native Joe Dyson has certainly been one to watch. He started playing music in his family’s church at just two years old and after being noticed for his peculiar talent, Joe was admitted into the Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp. Here he was shadowed by the late, great clarinetist Alvin Batiste, and his longtime bandleader and mentor, alto saxophonist Donald Harrison. He went on to graduate from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA), earning a Presidential Scholarship to his alma mater Berklee College of Music. Since graduating, Joe has shared the stage with Dr. Lonnie Smith, Ellis Marsalis, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Jon Batiste, Leo Nocentelli, Sullivan Fortner, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Paquito D’Rivera, Grammy Award winners Nicholas Payton & Esperanza Spalding, among others.

Hi latest album “Look Within” blends elements of jazz, gospel, R&B, and Afro-New Orleans rhythms that manages to create a luscious soundscape. Look Within is a sonic exploration of spirituality that marks the first time Joe has given himself permission to explore his psyche, and express himself via harmonic score. The Lead single “Look Within” has a euphonious melody, intertwined with a message of self-discovery and acceptance sung by the rising singer/songwriter L.E., also hailing from New Orleans.

With the exception of his New Orleans Second Line rendition of “Rhythm- A- Ning”, by Thelonious Monk, Look Within is comprised of 9 original tracks. The album spans from the ambient “Lost Trails for the Infidel”, and the lively “Forward’, to the laid back groove of “Forever Changed”. His father, Rev. Dr. J. C. Dyson, Sr. makes an appearance on the soul-stirring “Naysayers”, taking elements from one of his impassioned sermons. Balance is a word that best describes this album and it is sure to provoke profound emotions.

After many years of touring the globe with the likes of Nicholas Payton, Donald Harrison, and Dr. Lonnie Smith, as well as appearing at festivals such as North Sea, Newport, and New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Dyson has finally recorded the album he has been wanting to create. In Joe’s own words: “This record is an honest and earnest approach that gives my full expression to listeners. Most audiences see me as a drummer supporting the main act. Now, you will see, hear, and feel my thoughts through rhythmic and melodic vibrations.”

To commemorate this professional milestone, Dyson will be performing the entire album with a live band and studio audience at Davell Crawford’s Davell Underground, on March 5, 2021.
