BIMHUIS – Brazilian Music Series: 60 years of bossa nova!

Written by | Concerts, News

Brazilian Music Series celebrates 60 years of bossa nova! The successful concert series is dedicated to the blend of samba and jazz that has become synonymous with Brazilian music all over the world. Since the release of Chega De Saudade (No More Blues), the groundbreaking album by João Gilberto, the bossa nova has branched out into many directions. A number of them will be explored by Brazilian Music Series.

Classic Bossa goes back to the early bossa nova of the 1950s and 60s, which originated in the Copacabana neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro and is represented by singer Wanda Sá. Nova Bossa stands for the new generation of musicians who grew up with MPB (Música Popular Brasileira), represented here by João Sabiá. Many other forms, Outras Bossas, will be included in the Roda de Samba, the closing party with various bands, traditionally led by Nelson Latif.

Brazilian singer Wanda Sé is the hidden pearl of bossa nova, and one of the pioneers of the genre in the 1960s.

With her soft, velvety voice and delicate style, Wanda Sá is renowned as one of the most influential bossa nova singers. She made an impression with the albums Vagamente (1964) and Softly (1965), after which she dropped out of the picture while kindred spirits such as Tom Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes and João Gilberto made international fame. She picked up her career in the 1990s and in 2018 she’s more prolific than ever.

Roda Fina is the band of Brazilian singer João Sabiá, innovator of bossanova who adds a fair dose of soul and jazz to it.

Singer and actor João Sabiá and his band Roda Fina prove that bossa nova still matters for the new generation of Brazilian musicians. Soul and jazz are important influences for this singer-songwriter who grew up in the Copacabana neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, birthplace of the bossa nova and an important location for the subsequent MPB (Música Popular Brasileira).
