With 18 albums under his belt, Message in the Clouds marks the return of Greg Burk’s longtime group, Expanding Trio, with bassist Stefano Senni and drummer Enzo Carpentieri.
In true jazz tradition, the trio has evolved very much as a live group. Extensive touring in Europe, as well as highlights further afield – Buenos Aires Jazz Festival to name just one particular highlight – has created a level of understanding and musical togetherness that can only be developed over time.
The excitement and sensitivity these three musicians share is in full display on this latest record; blurring the boundaries of composition and improvisation, and reinvigorating the idea of the classic piano trio.
Greg’s recording career has seen him collaborate with some of the great independent modern jazz labels such as SteepleChase Records, 482Music, Soul Note and Jazzwerkstatt as well as renowned musicians like Jerry Bergonzi, John Tchicai, Gerald Cleaver & Bob Moses. But with this album, he reaffirms his goal to put those 20 years of experience to good use and build a legacy on his own label, Tonos Records.
Born into a family of classical musicians, his early experiences of jazz were heavily influenced by the Detroit scene at the time and, shortly after, as a student of jazz masters Yusef Lateef and Paul Bley.
